220V / 230V Power
Europe, Asia, Africa, most of the world
Overview
The 220-230V power band is the global majority. EU directive 2006/95/EC harmonised European supply to 230V ±10% (originally 220V); most countries previously on 220V still operate at the lower end of the tolerance. Continental Europe, Russia, China, India, most of Africa, and South America (Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay) all use this band at 50Hz.
For travelers from 110-127V countries (US, Canada, Mexico, parts of South America): most modern dual-voltage electronics (laptops, phone chargers, dual-voltage shavers) work directly with only a plug-shape adapter. Single-voltage 110V appliances (hair dryers, curling irons, kitchen gear) need a 220V-to-110V step-down converter sized for the appliance wattage. Hair dryers commonly need 1500W+ heavy-duty converters.
For travelers from 240V countries (UK, Australia, much of the Middle East): no converter needed. 230V/240V difference is within tolerance of all dual-voltage equipment.
