About the Italian Standard
The Italian tripolar telephone connector (so named for its three contact pins) was the standard analogue telephone plug used by SIP and successor Telecom Italia until widespread RJ-11 adoption in the late 1990s. The plug has a distinctive triangular pin layout.
Modern Italian installations use RJ-11, often via a wall-mounted RJ-11 socket adjacent to the older tripolar one. A tripolar-to-RJ-11 adapter is occasionally needed for analogue modem use.
